Wayne Rooney will miss the qualifier with Estonia

Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2016 Qualifier against Estonia, so vice-captain Gary Cahill will lead the Three Lions out at Wembley Stadium on Friday night.

Rooney became the country’s all-time top scorer with a penalty against Switzerland last month, but will miss the final home Group E game due to injury.

He has not trained fully since joining up with Roy Hodgson’s squad on Tuesday after picking up a knock for Manchester United at the weekend.

However, the Three Lions captain will remain with the squad as they travel down to their Watford base ahead of the game under the arch and will be at the stadium where he will receive a commemorative golden boot from Sir Bobby Charlton, whose record he beat last month.

Hodgson and Cahill will speak to the press on Thursday afternoon to update on the rest of the squad and preview the game.

Meanwhile, in the morning training activity at the national football centre, Jonjo Shelvey returned to action after missing the week’s first two sessions, while Liverpool’s Danny Ings and Manchester United’s Michael Carrick did not train.
