Barkley’s Everton and England team-mate, Phil Jagielka, continued his unusual run of goalscoring form, netting from a Leighton Baines cross.

Danny Welbeck spared Arsenal blushes by scoring a stoppage-time equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Hull City at Emirates Stadium.

The repeat of last season’s FA Cup final looked like going the Gunners’ way again when Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring, but Mo Diame and Abel Hernandez put Hull into a shock lead.

But Welbeck salvaged a point with a left-footed finish to score his fifth goal in seven matches since joining from Manchester United.

Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played 90 minutes but Jack Wilshere went off after 69 minutes with a suspected knee injury.

England’s goalkeepers enjoyed their matches, with Joe Hart saving a penalty in Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Fraser Forster, meanwhile, kept a clean sheet and watched his Southampton team-mates score eight unanswered goals against Sunderland. Nathaniel Clyne, a recent call-up to Roy Hodgson's squad, played at right-back for the Saints.

Gary Cahill, fresh from two clean sheets for England, played his part as Chelsea won 2-1 at Crystal Palace.

England Under-18s striker Dominic Solanke, a European champion with the Young Lions last summer, appeared on the Chelsea bench for the first time.

England Under-21s’ two goalscorers in Croatia last Monday experienced different emotions, with Liam Moore tasting defeat for Leicester City against Newcastle United, while Will Hughes featured in Derby County’s 2-0 win over Reading.

One of the Rams’ goals came from England Under-20s winger Jordon Ibe, on loan from Liverpool.

Another Premier League loanee, Devante Cole, also found the net. The England Under-19 international and product of Manchester City’s academy netted his third goal in nine games as Barnsley drew with Peterborough 1-1.

Ben Gibson came out on top in his battle with England Under-21s team-mate Jake Forster-Caskey, as the big defender’s Middlesbrough side won 2-1 at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Demarai Gray, a regular member of Shaun O’Driscoll’s England U19s squad, played the full match for Birmingham City in the 1-0 defeat by Birmingham City.

Gray’s international team-mate Dele Alli fared slightly better, going the distance in MK Dons’ goalless draw at Leyton Orient.

England Under-17s forward Karlan Ahearne-Grant played his first full senior game for Charlton Athletic in a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth.

Meanwhile in League Two, Exeter City’s England Under-20s duo Matty Grimes and Christy Pym played 90 minutes in the 1-1 stalemate at Southend.
