Jack Wilshere has hailed Alex Oxlade-Camberlain’s “great attitude” as his England teammate battles to get his World Cup bid back on track.

Oxlade-Chamberlain took part in a series of running drills earlier today – five days after picking up a knee injury in the 2-2 draw with Ecuador that threatened to end his Brazilian dream before it had started.

But Wilshere insists The Ox, 20, is in a positive frame of mind ahead of England’s tournament kick-off against Italy on Saturday.

He said: “Alex looks well. Today he was straight line running five days after getting a meniscus strain.

“It helps he’s young because the body heels when you’re younger and what also helps is that he’s got 24-hour treatment.

“Sometimes when you’re back at a club injuries can take a bit longer to heel because you’re not getting treatment all the time but here he’s got treatment when he wants it – that was a big part of him staying here.

“Hopefully we can get him training over the next few days and get him ready for the tournament. He’s got a great attitude and loves football.

“He had a knee injury at the beginning of the season which was worse than this one and he came back from that well and looked good and I think that was another factor in him staying here.

“We’ve seen him come back before and he’s fresh as well – he’s only played six months so hopefully we can get him back in the next couple of weeks.”

Wilshere and the rest of Roy Hodgson’s squad visited the Complexo Esportivo da Rocinha in Rio – a sports centre on the edge of the biggest favela in Brazil and home to 70,000 people.

While they were there, the England party were treated to a dazzling display of the Brazilian martial art capoeira, which combines dance, acrobatics and music.

And the Arsenal midfielder was impressed with the impact the sports centre has had on the local community since it was opened in march 2010.

Wilshere said: “It was a great welcome. You can see the scenery and the kids living here…they just want to come down here and play football.

“When I was growing up all I wanted to do was play football. They’ve been living in tougher conditions than I was and you can see the smiles on their faces when they’ve got a ball at their feet.

“It’s nice to come out here and see different parts of Brazil and try and help the kids when we can.”

Wilshere and his teammates trained in front of the stunning backdrop of Sugarloaf Mountain earlier today and the midfielder is eyeing a starting role in Hodgson’s starting XI for the match against Italy.

But he insists whoever gets the nod to start alongside captain Steven Gerrard will have the full support of the rest of the squad on Saturday.

Wilshere added: “We’ve got a great squad – young players, experienced players and a few that are in the middle.

“I don’t see myself as a young player anymore. Although it’s my first tournament I’m 22 now and we’ve got Luke Shaw with us who’s 18 so he makes me look that little bit older.

“There’s competition for places throughout the squad and it’d be a bit disrespectful to the likes of Frank Lampard and Ross Barkley to say it’s between me and Jordan Henderson.

“Frank’s played for England over 100 times and has had a fantastic career. He’s had a great season and so has Ross.

“Whoever gets that spot, the squad will be behind them.”
