England Player of 2014 contender: Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole's only appearance in 2014 was against Denmark

Without doubt, Ashley Cole will be remembered as one of England's best defenders having amassed 107 caps for his country.

In May 2014, the left-back brought the curtain down on his 13-year international career when he announced his retirement from international football.

He featured just once for England this year - against Denmark - and is one of 31 players to pull on the Three Lions in 2014.

A Chelsea player at the time, Cole started in the Wembley friendly in March and played the first 45 minutes. He was replaced at half-time by Luke Shaw

When Roy Hodgson named his squad for the World Cup Cole's name was omitted, which led to the 33-year-old calling time on his England career.

And as one of only nine players to reach a century of caps for England, Cole's contribution to the cause since his debut against Albania in 2001 could never be questioned.

Amazingly, only one of his 107 appearances for the Three Lions was as a substitute.

The former Arsenal defender also brought his eight-year association with Chelsea to an end this year and headed to Italy where he now plays for Serie A outfit AS Roma.
