Chelsea kept their hopes of retaining the Adobe Women’s FA Cup alive after they battled to a 2-1 extra-time win over Manchester United in the fifth round.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes at Kingsmeadow in what was a repeat of last year’s final, the second half continued in the same vein until Sam Kerr broke the deadlock 12 minutes from time with a low shot across goal following Veerle Buurman's knockdown.

But parity was restored just three minutes later through United substitute Simi Awujo who was on hand at the back post.

That meant an additional 30 minutes was required, and it was the Blues who struck the telling blow in that time as United States international Naomi Girma was able to stab the ball home after Marc Skinner's side could not clear their lines following a corner.

Elsewhere, Barclays Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City enjoyed a comfortable afternoon at Joie Stadium, running out 4-0 winners over WSL 2 outfit Sheffield United.

Two close-range goals inside the opening 11 minutes from Lauren Hemp, both assisted by Iman Beney, put the three-time FA winners in complete control - a position they never ceded.

Aoba Fujino made it 3-0 ten minutes later with a low strike before Laura Coombs added the icing on the cake for Andrée Jeglertz’s side in second-half stoppage time.

Arsenal booked their place in the quarter-finals courtesy of a 3-0 home victory over Bristol City.

Captain Kim Little put the Gunners ahead midway through the first half when she was in the right place at the right time to put the ball into the net following Katie McCabe’s free-kick.

Victoria Pelova’s deflected effort and Frida Maanum's tap in put the tie to bed in the second half, but Arsenal did see Olivia Smith stretchered off with a head injury.

One of the two other all-WSL encounters saw Brighton & Hove Albion hold on away from home to triumph 2-1 against West Ham United.

Former Lioness Fran Kirby produced an excellent display at the Chigwell Construction Stadium as the Euro 2022 winner opened the scoring on six minutes, before setting up Kiko Seike who doubled the Seagulls’ lead.

Leila Wandeler's goal led to a nervy final 15 minutes for Dario Vidosic, back in the dugout following the passing of his father Rado, and his team, but the Hammers were unable to find a second.

Liverpool earned both a place in the quarter-finals and cross-city bragging rights as they beat Everton 2-1 in the Merseyside derby.

First-half goals from Mia Enderby and Beata Olsson set the Reds on their way and despite Jennifer Falk’s own goal on 72 minutes, the home side were able to see the game out at St Helens Stadium.

And Charlton Athletic joined Birmingham City as the second-tier’s representatives in the last eight as Lucy Fitzgerald's penalty was enough to see off FA Women’s National League side Oxford United 1-0.
