Mansfield Town shock Burnley to progress to fifth round

Saturday 14 Feb 2026

Mansfield Town produced the shock of the day as the League One outfit came from behind to win 2-1 and dump Premier League Burnley out of the Emirates FA Cup fourth round.

Louis Reed’s superb free-kick 10 minutes from time completed a remarkable comeback for Nigel Clough’s side, who trailed 1-0 at the break thanks to Josh Laurent’s effort.

Rhys Oates brought parity to proceedings before skipper Reed sent the travelling Stags fans into raptures as their side clinched a place in the fifth round for the first time in over half a century.

Elsewhere, last season’s beaten finalists Manchester City battled past a spirited Salford City 2-0 while West Ham United crept past Burton Albion 1-0 after extra time in the day’s early kick off.

Stags’ comeback shocks Clarets

Mansfield Town will be celebrating a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1975 after downing Burnley at Turf Moor.

Mansfield were sat 37 places below their hosts at the start of the day, and the early stages of the game went according to league standings.

Ashley Barnes had a gilt-edged opportunity to give the home side the lead, but he couldn’t get the required contact to steer Quilindschy Hartman's cross home.

Laurent did however give Burnley the lead on 20 minutes; the 30-year-old finished into an empty net having shown excellent skill to sit goalkeeper Liam Roberts down with a cheeky feint just before.

Kyle Knoyle’s last-gasp goal line clearance from Jacob Bruun Larsen kept Mansfield in the tie, before Oates levelled the game after heading home – the goal being given after his earlier strike was chalked off for a foul in the build-up.

Scott Parker’s men did claw back control of the clash but couldn’t find another breakthrough, instead it was Reed who netted the winner for Mansfield via a memorable free-kick from 25-yards out.

And the Stags held on for a famous win after seeing Zian Flemming fire over from six yards out in stoppage time.

Salford fight valiantly in rematch

Manchester City ran out 2-0 winners at home to Salford City but were made to work for their win by the League Two side.

In the third round in 2025, Pep Guardiola’s side brushed Karl Robinson’s outfit aside 8-0, but there was no such comfort at the Etihad today as the Ammies gave a far better account of themselves.

The seven-time winners got off to a fast start after Alfie Dorrington put the ball past his own keeper inside six minutes.

But Salford gave the Premier League side problems of their own as Ben Woodburn sparked James Trafford into action with a fine stop while Brandon Cooper headed wide from a first-half corner.

With the game in the balance, Guardiola sent on last season’s cup-winning captain Marc Guehi, and it was the former Crystal Palace man who put the game to bed when he coolly finished past Matthew Young with nine minutes left.

Hammers edge past Brewers

West Ham reached the fifth round with a cagey 1-0-win over Burton Albion after extra time.

After the game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes, Crysencio Summerville bagged his sixth goal in his last seven appearances in the 95th minute to make sure the Hammers didn’t suffer a shock at the Pirelli Stadium.

Freddie Potts saw red in the first half of extra time, but Nuno Espirito Santo’s side survived to reach the fifth round.

Elsewhere, Norwich City beat West Bromwich Albion 3-1 at Carrow Road. Josh Maja cancelled out Paris Maghoma’s opener but late efforts from Ben Chrisene and Mohamed Toure proved decisive.

Southampton won their all-Championship encounter 2-1 against Leicester City as James Bree grabbed the winner in extra time.

Oliver Skipp’s impressive overhead kick had earlier brought the Foxes level following Cyle Larin’s first-half penalty.
