England's Nikita Parris itching to beat USA at the SheBelieves Cup

Parris poses with the trophy after winning the SheBelieves Cup in 2019

England forward Nikita Parris is relishing the opportunity to face USA again when the Lionesses travel to the SheBelieves Cup in March.

Phil Neville's squad will touch down on American soil as reigning champions and will play World Cup holders USA in their opening game in Orlando on Friday 6 March.

The Lionesses' victory at SheBelieves last year was followed up a few months later by a Women's World Cup semi-final meeting with USA, which ended in a heart-breaking defeat.

But the prospect of facing the number-one-ranked team in the world again does not phase Parris, who scored in the 2-2 draw between the two sides last year in Nashville.

"We've just got to make sure that we beat them this time," said the 25-year-old.

"In the World Cup semi-final we were disappointed but for us, as a team moving forwards towards the Olympics and EURO 2021, this is the first stepping stone.

"We'll show them how far we've come since the summer.

Parris scores against USA in 2-2 draw

"Ultimately to go there and win a tournament which they take very seriously, on their own soil, was a great achievement for us last year.

"And if we want to be one of the best teams in the world, we've got to continue to compete with them and win it again."

This year, the Lionesses will face competition from fellow Europeans Spain as they replace Brazil in the competition to make their debut with Japan completing the foursome.

With EURO 2021 just over a year away, Parris has already got one eye on the competition and is confident that the Americans, and their extravagant tendencies, will deliver a tournament worth watching.

"It's great being in America because it's just such a big place, they are bold whether it's with their football, music or food - they stand out," she added.

"They love to do things on a massive scale and they always put on a spectacle in this competition, there's always big crowds too and the stadiums are unbelievable.

"Spain are one of the up and coming teams to look out for in world football and have some fantastic players; Jennifer Hermoso, in particular, is so dangerous.

"They're a very skillful and technical team playing possession-based football so they'll be a hard team to beat."

Parris wheels away in celebration

The annual competition is now heading into its fifth edition, but it's not just the upcoming EURO 2021 on home turf that Parris is looking ahead to, but also the more immediate summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Neville will be restricted to a squad of just 18 players from all of the home nations for the tournament in Japan, meaning every opportunity to impress the manager between now and then is vital for players who wish to be selected.

"Obviously, we've got the Olympics in the summer too so there's no better way to kick-start the year because it'll be the first time we're all going to be together," added Parris.

"Everyone is fighting for a position against each other too and that's good for us because there are definitely players from the home nations that could come into the squad for Tokyo."
