Leicester City needed VAR for their second goal against Fleetwood Town

Five Emirates FA Cup third round ties were decided on Tuesday night with Leicester City making history with a first VAR-awarded goal against Fleetwood Town.

West Ham needed extra-time to get past Shrewsbury Town whilst there was also wins for Cardiff City, Sheffield Wednesday and Reading.

Here’s the five things we learned from the five replays:

History made in Emirates FA Cup

The first ever goal to be given after the use of VAR went to Kelechi Iheanacho, as the Leicester striker put the Foxes 2-0 up against Fleetwood Town at the King Power Stadium.

The 21-year-old striker had given Leicester the lead in the first half after being put through on goal by Islam Slimani and sliding the ball under Fleetwood goalkeeper Chris Neal.

And Ihenacho had the ball in the back of the net a second time after the break but the linesman correctly adjudged the ball to have gone out of play prior to Demarai Gray’s cutback.

The striker wasn’t to be denied again though, despite being ruled narrowly offside when he latched onto a ball from captain for the night Riyad Mahrez and chipping over the on-rushing Neal.

But after consultation with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Ihenacho was deemed to be onside and the goal was awarded by referee Jonathan Moss.

Vardy gets his moment

Jamie Vardy remains a fan-favourite of Leicester and Fleetwood fans and after injury ruled him out of the first tie, he got his chance in the replay.

Foxes manager Claude Puel made the change with 80 minutes gone to give the England striker a run out and he received a strong reception from both sets of supporters.

Vardy was unable to add to Leicester’s two-goal advantage and he remains the only play to score an FA Cup third round goal for Fleetwood Town.

City travel to Peterborough in the fourth round after the League One side knocked out Aston Villa in the third round a few weeks ago.

Burke breaks Hammers duck

Young defender Reece Burke got his first Hammers goal deep into extra-time as West Ham United needed 120 minutes to see off a determined Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old hit a fine half-volley which flew in via the underside of the crossbar to prevent the third round replay going to a penalty shootout.

Burke is a product of the Hammers youth system, has been capped by England at U18 level and has enjoyed loan spells at Bradford City, Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers in the past.

His goal was enough to see West Ham into the fourth round where they will play travel to either AFC Bournemouth or Wigan Athletic.

Bodvarsson on song

A change of shirt at half time for the entire Reading team failed to halt their momentum, as Jon Dadi Bodvarsson scored a hat-trick in their 3-0 win over Stevenage.

Bodvarsson scored twice in the first 45 minutes but, with the Royals kit deemed too similar to Stevenage’s, they switched to orange shirts for the second half.

The Icelandic international had volleyed home at the far post after 32 minutes to open the scoring before a diving header from the 25-year-old doubled their lead.

And the change of strip made no difference to Bodvarsson, as he secured his hat-trick to set up a tie with Sheffield Wednesday in the fourth round.

Cardiff and Wednesday through

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was at Field Mill to see his fourth round opponents in action and it’ll be Cardiff City after the Bluebirds beat Mansfield Town by 4-1 in their replay.

Cardiff will welcome the Premier League leaders to Wales after Bruno Manga, Junior Hoilett (2) and Anthony Pilkington got the goals for the Championship side.

Sheffield Wednesday will be at home in the next round, against Reading, after a 2-0 win over Carlisle in their Tuesday night replay.

Atdhe Nuhiu set up Marco Matias for the first before bagging the second himself to secure his side’s safe progression to the next round.
