Fran Kirby reveals her Top 5 England goals

Friday 21 Dec 2018
Fran Kirby has scored 12 goals in 34 England appearances

Scoring for England is a feeling that I cannot really describe.

Whether you score to make it 1-0 or it's the last in a 6-0, it's really, really special. You have to pinch yourself and remind yourself you've scored for your country.

I don't think it's a feeling you ever get used to. Even now, when I score for England, I still have the same reaction every time – you can see that surprised look on my face, full of joy.

You feel like the kid who got all the best presents for Christmas!

My Top 5:

v Sweden (friendly), 03.08.14

This was my debut for England and it was a nervous week leading into it. We found out the team the day before and luckily I was able to let my friends know, and my dad came up for it as well. It was in Hartlepool, so they had a long way to go, but I'm so glad they were able to be there to make it a really special occasion.

It was just one of those days when I felt really good leading up to it, and then in the first half I missed a really good chance, which I was gutted about going in at half time.

Then another chance came my way in the second half. I remember cutting inside and just hitting it with my left foot and luckily it went all the way to the back post.

It was one of those goals which looked like it was in slow motion, and it definitely felt that way for me! I didn't really know what to do when it hit the back of the net, I just started running around and then everyone jumped on me to celebrate. It was a really nice moment.

v Mexico (FIFA Women's World Cup), 13.06.15

At the time I was playing in WSL 2 for Reading, so it was a bit crazy to take that massive leap up to a World Cup.

This was our second game of the group stage, having lost the first, and I was given my first start at the tournament.

Just like the game against Sweden, I missed a good chance in the first half but I didn't let my head drop. This time the ball came over to me and I took a touch as a defender was sliding in to try and win the ball. I was thinking of shooting, but when I saw the other defender coming in I feinted to shoot and if that hadn't work I probably would have been slated for not hitting it earlier!

I just managed to get my little toe in front of the other girls and the goalkeeper and it hit the post. When that happened, I was just hoping it was going to go in and I remember running away to celebrate. When it went in I was so relieved and, again, I didn't know how to celebrate. I ran over to the girls warming up on the sidelines and it was a great moment to enjoy with them.

It's so crazy to think this was only three-and-a-bit years ago. So much has happened since then, it's been an absolute whirlwind.

Spain (UEFA Women's Euro finals), 23.07.17

There was only a minute and a half on the clock when I scored. We broke from a throw-in and the ball fell to Ellen [White], who had two options over and then me on the near side.

She picked me and I think I was more worried about missing than anything, but I just kept my head and slotted it into the near corner.

I don't think anyone expected us to score so early and to settle the nerves was important because we knew with our defence we could keep them from scoring. Luckily enough we pinched another one at the end and it was a great win.

The Euros was a different experience compared to the World Cup, because we had that expectation on us. We'd gone from a tournament where no one really knew about women's football and then suddenly people are expecting you to win the Euros.

We certainly saw ourselves as contenders for the trophy, so we were disappointed to lose in the semi-finals.

v Brazil (friendly), 06.10.18

This one should probably go as my number one, because I never score headers! Like the Spain one, it came so early in the game and you just don't expect to find yourselves in those positions.

I've been working really hard this season to get myself in the box to give myself more of a chance to get on the end of crosses. It's something I know I've got to work on in my game and I've been doing that. Heading isn't something that comes naturally to me, so I think I was as surprised as anyone when I saw it hit the crossbar and go in.

To score against Brazil is absolutely massive. Growing up, you always have this fear of Brazilian football – you know the illustrious history they have and they always have good players. It was just amazing and just a big surprise to score in the manner I did.

It was an honour to share a pitch with Marta, too, although she went off injured pretty early on. We know all about her ability and standing in the game is, so it was a nice experience.

v China (friendly), 09.04.15

I got an assist early in the game for a goal by Jodie Taylor, so I was really confident after that. I was probably in a position I shouldn't have been; I was in the box when the ball was out wide, and I was playing as a No10 so I probably should have been outside of the box.

Even so, I was there and when Jordan [Nobbs] put the ball in, the player in front of me slipped, which obviously helped as I think she'd have cleared it otherwise.

The ball hit me and bounced up and I caught it perfectly on the half-volley. It's probably one of the best strikes of my career, I caught it so sweetly and it flew into the top corner. It's definitely one of the best I've ever hit.

It was a great boost for me personally ahead of the World Cup, but as much as anything I think it gave the whole group a lot of confidence ahead of the tournament. China are an up and coming team, they were building then, and I think they'll be a good challenge at next year's tournament.
