Late South Shields strike dumps out York City

Gavin Cogdon’s dramatic injury-time strike produced one of the upsets of the Emirates FA Cup third round qualifying as eighth-tier South Shields dumped out York City 3-2.

The forward pounced late on for the Northern Premier League Division One North side after the Mariners had let a two-goal lead slip.

A Carl Finningan penalty and an effort by former Sunderland man Julio Arca had put Shields in control but goals from Sean Newton and Jon Parkin appeared to save the National League North side.

But Cogdon was on hand as the Buildbase FA Vase winners progressed to the fourth round qualifying for the first time in their history.

History also beckons for Bostik League North side Haringey Borough as they thumped Bideford 4-1 and can now look forward to their maiden appearance in the next round.

A hat-trick from Ralston Gabriel and a second half strike from Anthony McDonald secured a famous victory at Coles Park.

There were upsets aplenty in the world’s original cup competition as Bostik Premier outfit Burgess Hill dumped National League South side Wealdstone out.

The game had been meandering towards a replay when Cheick Toure’s volley in injury time stunned the visitors, who made the first round proper in 2015, and sent Hill into the hat for the next round.

Northern League Division One side Shildon upset the odds against Southern Premier outfit Banbury United as they edged into the fourth round qualifying with a 3-2 victory.

A brace from Adam Burnicle and a strike from player-manager Bobby Moore helped the Railwaymen pull off a shock at the Spencer Stadium.

FC United of Manchester produced a stunning comeback from 3-0 down to draw away at Stockport County.

Second half strikes from Jason Gilchrist, Tom Greaves and Steve Irwin means the sides will do battle again on Tuesday.

There was drama at the Barton Stadium as two goals in two minutes sent 1874 Northwich’s game against Ossett Town to a replay.

Northwich, who are in the North West Counties Premier Division, looked to be heading out when Alex Peterson netted in the 90th minute but moments later Adam Whitlock equalised to keep 1874 in the draw.

Phoenix club Hereford will be making their first appearance in the fourth round qualifying since reforming after cruising past AFC Hornchurch 2-0.

The lowest team left in the competition, Ashton Athletic, held on against National League North side Chorley until the final ten minutes before Nick Haughton’s sweet strike sent the Magpies through.

Elsewhere the Tigers mauled the Poachers as Hyde United came back from 2-1 down to beat Boston Town 3-2 and Enfield Town equalled their best ever Emirates FA Cup run with victory over Phoenix Sports.
