'We've done our town proud'

Hear from The Buildbase FA Vase winners South Shields and runners-up Cleethorpes Town

South Shields lifted The Buildbase FA Vase at Wembley Stadium connected by EE on Sunday afternoon after dispatching Cleethorpes Town 4-0.

A Carl Finnigan penalty got the Mariners up and running shortly before half-time.

And they rounded off an unforgettable victory with three goals in the final 10 minutes, Dillon Morse grabbing their second before David Foley hit a late brace.

We heard from both teams:

The FA ;

South Shields man of the match Wayne Phillips said:

“We didn’t get the early goal that we wanted, which would have calmed everyone down but we knew they would tire – we just stuck to our ways.

“The season we’ve had has been absolutely unbelievable. Apart from the FA Cup, which we’re never going to win, we’ve won everything else, so what more can you ask for?

“I’m a Shields lad as well. In weeks to come, and hopefully years to come, you’ll realise that you’ve done your town proud.

“The Wembley experience is exhausting but I wouldn’t change it for the world, though.

“You become a professional for a few days and do what professionals do on a regular basis – it’s unbelievable.

“I thought I was good in the first half. I thought I ran the game from midfield in the first half and had not such a good second half.

“It wasn’t sure I was going to get man of the match. It’s been a massive team game and getting that tops it off.”

The FA ;

Cleethorpes Town goalkeeper Liam Higton said:

“We just didn't turn up and it’s disappointing for myself and the lads, but fair play to South Shields – they deserved it and credit to them.

“I think the turning point was the penalty.

“I’ve changed my mind and I’ve gone the other way – if I go the right way, it’s another save for the season.

“It’s one of those things. Sometimes it goes for you and sometimes it doesn’t and today, it’s not gone for us.

“Personally, I thought I did alright but that’s what I’m there to do; I’m there to stop the goals from going in.

“I’ve done that on a few occasions but on the four occasions today, the ball was just out of my reach.

“It’s been a great season for the lads. This is a bonus and once again, fair play to South Shields – well played.”
