'I'm greedy, I want to win the final'

Coach Simpson hails backroom staff as England reach first World Cup final since 1966

Thursday 08 Jun 2017

Coach Paul Simpson is bursting with pride after months of meticulous preparation for the U20 World Cup have paid dividends with England through to the final.

As the first team to seal qualification for Korea, an unbeaten group stage campaign followed by victories over Costa Rica and Mexico saw the Young Lions through to the semi-final stage for only the third time in the tournament’s history.

Not since 1966 has an England team at any level reached a World Cup final but, despite falling behind in the early exchanges to Italy in Jeonju, Simpson’s youngsters maintained their composure and their class showed through with three second-half goals.

Simpson said: “We were absolutely magnificent from the first whistle.

“I know we went a goal down early on through a slight little lapse in concentration and good play from Italy to catch us out. But after that, the way we applied ourselves and the discipline that we kept, and the goals, it was a fantastic performance worthy of winning any game at any level of football.

“One of the reasons we’ve got stronger as the tournament has gone on is the planning. We have been working for months on how we were going to approach the whole tournament.

“Once we got all the fixtures through we had a plan. The FA allowed us to go to Japan for a week before we arrived in South Korea, so we did a lot of hard work and major preparation there.

“So when we got over here all we had to do was make sure the players understood the game plans.

“We knew if we kept the ball and made the Italians chase round the field then in the last 25 minutes we could really cause some damage and it went exactly how we wanted. That’s credit to all the staff.”

Simpson was born four days before Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup at Wembley Stadium.

Like so many, he has enjoyed a lifetime of ‘oh so nears’ when it comes to tournament football.

But his players now stand on the brink of writing a major chapter in English football history against Venezuela on Sunday and Simpson is desperate to finish the job.

He added: “I covered every blade of grass in that technical area and I am the proudest man that I could ever be.

“It’s a dream to take a team to a World Cup final. I was born in 1966 and that was the last time we did it.

“We have a whole group of people that have supported us so well and we now want to do ourselves justice in the final.

“We’re delighted to be in it and I’ve said from the first day I am greedy and I want to go and win the final. I don’t just want to make the numbers up, I want to go and win it.

“The preparation for the final has begun. I said to the players before we left the pitch ‘enjoy this, but let’s get our heads on the final now’.

“I might start my preparations with a nice glass of red wine, a nice bonus for us, but the work starts now because it’s a tight turnaround to the final and we’re really excited, proud as anything, but we’re here to win.

“We always thought we had a chance to go to the final. We’ve achieved that, but really we’ve achieved nothing yet because we have to go and win and put our name into the history books of English football.”
