'Annie Z' aiming high

UEFA B coach collects British Empire Medal but wants to achieve much more

Monday 05 Jun 2017

The sky’s the limit for first female Muslim UEFA B coach Annie Zaidi, who last month collected a British Empire Medal having been named in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

Known to the players she has worked with as ‘Coach AnnieZ’, the 33-year-old is highly regarded within the English coaching community and has enjoyed spells at several professional clubs.

A role model to many, Zaidi, who attended the ceremony with mentor Michael Bennett from the PFA, works tirelessly to pass on her passion for the sport and inspire young girls and women to realise their potential through her Coach AnnieZ Foundation.

“I’m so humbled by the whole experience,” said Zaidi, who grew up in Ipswich and, latterly, Nuneaton. “But I don’t think I have achieved anything yet as still have a lot to achieve, especially now being on The FA BAME Menteeship programme.

“The programme has not only been a great way for me to develop my skills, understanding and experience, but working within the national governing organisation has inspired me even more to continue on my path.

“And with more hard work I know I can become the elite coach I have the potential to be."

Zaidi, set to begin working towards her A licence on 1 January 2018, was joined at the ceremony by FA coach inclusion and diversity manager Wayne Allison, who was delighted that her contribution as a coach and as role model for young people was being recognised.

“It’s fantastic to see Annie receive this recognition,” said Allison.

“Her work, her passion, and her dedication to not only her own coaching journey but as a role model to so many young people is incredible.

“We have been delighted to have her on The FA BAME Menteeship Programme this year and it has been great to see how she continued her development as a coach and put herself in a great position to move forwards in her career.”
