Six-goal hauls help Diamonds and Chalfont into next round

Tuesday 11 Oct 2016
There were a few big wins in the Buildbase FA Trophy on Tuesday night.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Chalfont St Peter both hit six in their Buildbase FA Trophy preliminary round replay victories on Tuesday evening.

Having drawn 1-1 at home to Histon on Saturday, Rushden and Diamonds made no mistake at the Glassworld Stadium as the sides met once again.

Taylor Orosz fired them into the lead from outside the area, after just three minutes, and the striker had doubled their advantage with just over a quarter of an hour on the clock.

Another confident strike from Tom Lorraine meant their progression was all but secured by half time and Nabil Shariff, Lorraine and Jake Newman made it 6-0 to the visitors, before Danny Gould’s long-range strike earned Histon a consolation.

Diamonds will now welcome Coalville Town in the first qualifying round and they will be joined there by Chalfont St Peter, after their 6-0 win at home to Arlesey Town.

Adam Kirby, Jake Cass and Alan Hedley all scored excellent goals in the first half to ensure Chalfont’s dominance was rewarded with a 3-0 lead at the interval.

And a double from Charlie Strutton, and one for Craige Tomkins, ensured an emphatic win to earn a home tie with Corinthian-Casuals.

Two of Tuesday night’s replays needed extra-time, as Lincoln United and Winchester City both recorded 3-1 victories after their respective games with Romulus and Petersfield Town finished 1-1 after the allotted 90 minutes.

Liam Hailey looked set to send Romulus through with three minutes remaining but the visitors forced extra-time through Sam Mullarkey, before Danny Brooks’ penalty and another goal from Mullarkey landed a first qualifying round contest with Gresley.

Similarly it was Petersfield Town who had gone ahead in their match with Winchester City after Gary Judd gave the hosts the lead.

But Winchester grabbed an equaliser inside the 90 minutes before Sam Wilson and Jamie Ford set up a tie against Fleet Town.

North Leigh and Lewes enjoyed 4-1 and 3-0 wins over Bridgwater Town and Tilbury, while there were also victories for Prescot Cables, Mossley, Lancaster City, Bedworth United, Kempston Rovers, VCD Athletic and Wimborne Town.
