Midfielder wants hard work on the training pitch to yield maximum points

Midfielder Jordan Henderson believes England are on the right track under the tutelage of interim-manager Gareth Southgate.

Former defender Southgate takes charge of the Three Lions for the third time on Friday, having taken four points from 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia.

It’s a tally that places them top of Group F ahead of Scotland’s visit.

And Henderson, 26, hopes the hard yards being put in at St George’s Park will bear fruit at Wembley Stadium.

“The manager has done brilliantly since being given the opportunity,” said Henderson, capped 30 times for England.

“The players are very supportive of him and we feel as though we are going in the right direction.

“On the training pitch we have learnt a lot and we are trying to put those ideas into a game situation.

“So hopefully we can put that into practice in the game and hopefully the performance is at a high level. If we do that I’m sure we’ll get the three points.”

As part of their preparations for Friday night’s fixture the 25-man squad have watched footage of past meetings between England and Scotland.

The Three Lions have triumphed in the last two – both entertaining encounters that saw nine goals scored.

Henderson was an unused substitute at Celtic Park in the last meeting two years ago, and has enjoyed the walk down memory lane.

“It is a massive game. If you look at the history it is huge, it isn’t just a normal fixture,” added the Liverpool star.

“We watched a video of a lot of the past games – a lot a before my time – but there’s a few I can remember, especially when ‘Gazza’ scored the brilliant goal at Euro ’96.

“That was a really big moment, not just between England and Scotland, but with England in general – that’s one goal that really stands out for me.

“So the lads know the importance, not only because it’s England v Scotland, but because we want to qualify for Russia as best we can and this will put us in a good position if we can win the game.”

Players from both sides will mark Armistice Day by wearing black armbands emblazoned with poppies.

And Henderson says the whole squad are delighted they will get the chance to pay tribute.

He added: “It’s very important for the country, for the players to remember what people did and sacrificed for the country.”
