Jamie Vardy described his first international goal at Wembley as "an unbelievable feeling" but the night was to end in disappointment as Netherlands came from behind to beat England 2-1 at Wembley.

Vardy scored his second England goal just three days after his exquisite first to put Roy Hodgson’s men in front shortly before the interval after a slick passing move.

But the visitors equalised five minutes into the second half when Vincent Janssen sent Fraser Forster the wrong way from the penalty spot, and Danny Blind’s men grabbed a contentious second Luciano Narsingh scored at the far post.

Vardy said: “It was an unbelievable feeling [to score for England at Wembley] but the result is disappointing.

“I have to now keep playing how I have been playing in the league and we will see what happens this summer but the result is disappointing tonight.”

England controlled possession for large parts of this Breast Cancer Care International but struggled to regularly recreate the incisive attacking play they displayed when defeating Germany in Berlin on Saturday.

That was acknowledged by stand-in captain James Milner after the match.

Milner said: “It was frustrating. We probably didn’t hit the heights that we hit at the weekend which is disappointing but two decisions could have gone the other way for their two goals.

“For the handball [Danny Rose's] hands are by his side and you want to get the decision on [Janssen's push on] Jagielka as well but we don’t want to moan about the referee because we haven’t done enough tonight to win the game.

“We didn’t do enough with the ball. We had the majority of the possession and we pressed well and got it back when we didn’t have it but we didn’t do enough with the ball.”

Danny Drinkwater was handed a debut in the centre of midfielder and the 26-year-old picked up the Vauxhall England man-of-the-match award.

And Drinkwater’s Leicester City team-mate Vardy added: “Danny did himself no harm at all tonight and hopefully he will keep performing like he has in the league and we will see what happens.”
