Nuneaton Griff and Cleethorpes edge closer to Wembley

Saturday 09 Jan 2016
There were four FA Vase fourth round matches on Saturday

Nuneaton Griff will have their name in the hat for the fifth round of The FA Vase after Ryan Millerchip’s second-half winner saw them edge a five-goal thriller at AFC Wulfrunians.

Ben Ashby looped a seventh-minute header over the home side’s keeper to send Griff ahead, and they doubled their advantage in a frantic start to the game when Alex Naughton fired in from just inside the area.

Wulfrunians were down but not out and hit back almost immediately, Kyle Brady the scorer as he pounced on a goalkeeping error to pull a goal back and make the scoreline 2-1.

And Brady had a second before the interval to draw the hosts level, finishing with aplomb after Jake Sedgemore’s brilliant solo run and through ball on 32 minutes.

But Millerchip scored what proved to be the winner just one minute into the second half with a downward header from a corner, and Griff defended admirably in tough conditions to see out the result.

Elsewhere, Cleethorpes Town came from behind to put themselves in the last 16 with a 2-1 win over Alvechurch.

Josh March put the Church ahead with just three minutes on the clock, beating Peter Winn to the ball and side-footing home to make it 1-0.

Despite Cleethorpes having the better chances they went into the break behind, but Jonathan Oglesby finally brought them level on the hour as he slotted home a long cross from Winn.

Brody Robertson came close to scoring for the Owls as he squandered a one-on-one chance, but they did go ahead when Danny Trott smashed home Marc Cooper’s cross – with just three minutes separating the two goals.

Alex Campana put Berkhamsted through against Hullbridge Sports, hitting a hat-trick to make the final score 4-2.

Bradley O'Donovan gave the hosts an early lead but it was his strike partner Campana who stole the headlines with three brilliantly taken goals, despite Hullbridge levelling the tie at 2-2 at one stage with two goals for Luke Hornsley.

FC Romania were beaten 2-1 at home by Camberley Town, with Matt Bunyan and Dan Jewell on target for the Krooners in a feisty encounter, and Hereford’s clash with Leicester Nirvana was abandoned at half-time due to heavy rain with the hosts leading 3-1.

Meanwhile in the third round matches that were still to be played, Adam Preston’s dramatic 95th-minute winner put Marske through 2-1 against Team Northumbria, and Malky Morien also hit a very late winner to hand 2012 winners Dunston UTS a 1-0 win over Seaham Red Star.

Five fourth round matches were postponed until Saturday 16 January and a further four third round clashes were called off until Tuesday 12 January.
