Glovers shock West Brom to reach FA Youth Cup Fourth Round

Tuesday 06 Dec 2016

Yeovil Town marched on in the FA Youth Cup as they produced something of an upset to beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in their Third-Round clash.

Yeovil had already seen off Newport County and Merstham in this year’s competition but claimed their biggest scalp so far by downing West Brom at the Hawthorns.

The Baggies had taken an early lead when Evan Pierce nodded home following Jonathan Leko’s good work on the left-hand side but Callum Morton coolly slotted the equaliser before the break.

And there was double woe for Albion on 62 minutes as captain Max Melbourne was sent off for hauling down Morton on the edge of the area before Joe Tomlinson fired home the resulting free-kick.

Paul Akinuli put the game beyond doubt seven minutes later by hammering into the net from a corner, which meant Yeovil goalkeeper Kingsley Latham’s 90th-minute own goal couldn’t stop them progressing into Round Four.

Meanwhile, in the battle of Yorkshire, Hull City produced a remarkable comeback to beat Leeds United 3-2 after extra-time.

Malik Wilks’ first-half double – as he converted Callum Nicell’s pinpoint delivery before turning Matt Downing’s pass into the bottom left-hand corner of the net – appeared to have Leeds on cruise control.

But Robbie McKenzie’s calmly-taken 88th-minute penalty, after Wilks felled Ahmed Salam, and Lewis Ritson’s scrambled goal at the death forced an extra 30 minutes.

And with 104 minutes on the clock, McKenzie headed home his second of the night to send the Tigers into the next round.

Nottingham Forest also needed extra-time to see off Ipswich Town as Ben Brerton’s double in the first half of the additional 30 minutes eventually proved enough for them to prevail 4-2.

Forest youngster Toby Edser’s majestic free-kick had been cancelled out by Ben Morris’ clinical finish before Virgil Gomis’ curler was followed by the Tractor Boys’ Andre Dozzell producing a beautiful free-kick of his own.

Things were more straightforward for Aston Villa as efforts from Jordan Cox and Jack Clarke handed them a 2-0 win at Bristol City, while Shrewsbury Town beat Accrington Stanley 2-1 – Ryan Sears and a screamer from Matt Jones negating Zhen Mohammed’s early goal for Accrington.
