Neil Dewsnip believes this week’s double-header in Holland has provided him with valuable insight ahead of the FIFA U17 World Cup.

His England Under-18s recorded an impressive 2-0 victory on Thursday before they ground out a 0-0 draw on Saturday having played an hour with ten men following Tayo Edun’s sending off.

And ahead of his side’s trip to Chile for the showpiece next month, Dewsnip is delighted with what he has discovered from his squad in the Netherlands.

"They were very compact and disciplined and had to work very hard to get something from the game," he said.

"We were very disappointed with the sending-off. It was a bad tackle and let’s hope it was down to over-enthusiasm, but it caused us a problem that we may face at the World Cup.

"They’ve had to play with ten men for nearly an hour, which is a huge challenge against a talented Dutch side, so we are obviously delighted that we got through the game.

"That could be the difference in Chile, between being knocked out or getting to a penalty shoot-out in the knockout stages.

"We weren’t looking for this particular exercise, but it’s proved to be a good one. I’m relatively happy but we didn’t get to use the game for the things we really wanted to.”

The former Everton academy manager continued: "One of the things that we now know about the group is that they have fantastic character both individually and as a group.

"I guess you only find those things out when you find yourself in times of trouble.

"All the players and all the subs that came on were fantastic to get through that ordeal that they found themselves in."

Dewsnip and his squad will fly to South America at the beginning of October, and after what he has seen over the past few days, the head coach believes he will have a "powerful formula" at his disposal.

"I thought we played really well in the first half of the first game. We know that we can control possession and play some exciting football, but in these strange circumstances we found ourselves in today we discovered that the lads have grit and determination.

"They can hang together and protect their goal too, and all that added together adds up to quite a powerful formula."
