Sunderland striker Beth Mead targets WSL title charge

Sunderland's Beth Mead has taken the WSL by storm this season
FA WSL 1 top scorer Beth Mead hopes her goals will not go to waste as Sunderland set their sights on winning the title.

The Black Cats, second in the table, travel to title-rivals Manchester City on Sunday, hopeful of a victory to heap pressure on front-runners Chelsea.

Should they prove successful then Mead will take great credit having hit 11 league goals in as many games.

And although Mead admits scoring more goals in the top-flight than the ten she managed in last season’s promotion-winning campaign has taken her by surprise, the 20-year-old now wants a medal to show for her goal glut.

"It’s been a dream season for me, I would have bitten your hand off just to have scored a few but to be top scorer in the league is a dream come true," said Mead.

"Now hopefully we can finish the season well, so these goals count for something.

"It would be amazing to win the league, for the players, the coaches and all the staff involved and of course the fans.

"It would be great for the whole area as well, what a feeling it would be and would hopefully be great for football in the north east."

Sunderland have played City both in The FA Women’s Super League with BT Sport and The FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup already this season.

On both occasions they suffered defeat and have also dropped points in their last two WSL 1 matches.

Throw in three straight defeats and that means they are the only WSL 1 team missing from the Continental Tyres Cup so it looks as though Sunderland are succumbing to the pressure at the business end of the season.

But Mead shrugs off that notion and insists confidence remains high.

"We had a few off games recently, but we played a few different line-ups and brought in some girls to give them a chance to have a look if we could use them in the league," she added.

"The results have not knocked us at all, we will not let it affect us because we have got good morale in this team and the right attitude.

"When we played Man City earlier this season, we had some good chances on the day and didn’t finish them off but only ended up losing the game 1-0.

"If we play like we know we can then we have got a good chance of beating them."
