Queens Park Rangers climbed off the foot of the FA WPL Southern Division table with their first win of the season, shocking league leaders Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 at home.

It was a first defeat of the season for Brighton after they took the lead through Amy Taylor, who came off the bench and clinically dispatched the ball past Cheadle five minutes after half-time.

West Ham United 1-0 Lewes

However, a penalty from Danielle Puddefoot and Joanne Wilson’s strike saw Rangers hit back and end Albion’s unbeaten run of 12 games.

And Brighton manager James Marrs insisted that while it had been a bad day at the office for his side, he would not be ripping up the playbook just yet.

“I don't think we played very well,” he said. “But I don't want to start tearing the players apart because we've been on a fantastic run.

“I thought a draw would have been a fair result on the day, and I wouldn't say that QPR necessarily deserved to win the game.

“Sometimes penalty decisions don't go in your favour and it’s disappointing, but we've got to get our heads up and go back to the drawing board next week.”

Elsewhere, Cardiff City made sure they would not miss their opportunity to close the gap and came away from Plymouth with a 3-1 win to cut Albion's lead to only one point.

City went three up before Dani Salt pulled one back for Argyle, and their skipper Katie Middleton saved a penalty in the dying moment to keep the scoreline respectable.

Charlton also piled on the pressure at the summit of the Southern Division, hitting Forest Green Rovers for six to go within two points of the leaders.

In-form striker Gemma Shepherd forced an own-goal, before scoring herself after a one-two with Jenny Newman.

She then netted a third with just 23 minutes on the clock, lobbing the Forest Green keeper after Stef Simmons’ inch-perfect ball.

Jodie Shepherd then diverted a Simmons pull-back into the net for a second own-goal, and Jenny Newman made it 5-0 by half-time.

It looked like the game was headed for a cricket score, but the scoring was complete four minutes after the restart with Simmons getting in on the act after being set up by Kim Dixson.

But unlike Charlton, Coventry and Portsmouth both lost ground on the sides ahead of them after a tense 1-1 draw at The Oval.

Sarah Kempson and Ini Umotong combined to set up Gemma Hillier for Pompey's opener after 17 minutes, but in an improved second-half performance, Amber Hughes levelled from close range for the hosts.

And towards the bottom of the table West Ham are three points short of Lewes in ninth with as many games in hand, after edging them out 1-0 to record a second win of the season.

Paige Anderson-James got the only goal of the game after she was set up by Romi Pinna, finishing emphatically to hand her side three points.
