Monday 05 Oct 2015
There was one FA Vase second round replay on Monday evening

Jamie Bulpitt and Marvin McLean both scored twice as Sholing beat United Services Portsmouth 6-0 to progress into the first round proper of The FA Vase.

Bulpitt netted either side of Byron Mason to set the Boatmen on their way before McLean and Dan Mason put the result beyond doubt before half time, as the hosts went into the break 5-0 down.

McLean then scored again just after the hour mark to set up a home tie against Laverstock and Ford in the first round proper.

There were doubts the game would even be played before the match due to the adverse weather conditions, but the referee gave it the all-clear 40 minutes before kick-off.

And Sholing had the first chance of note when Mason headed wide from a corner after five minutes but Mark Christie had a glorious opportunity to put Portsmouth in front when he fired over the bar when unmarked.

But from that point on there only looked likely to be one winner.

Bulpitt opened the floodgates on 17 minutes when he surged through the middle and rode a tackle before firing the ball underneath the goalkeeper.

Sholing captain Mason, then doubled the advantage just two minutes later when he headed in Kevin Brewster’s free-kick, before a long-range strike from Bulpitt made it 3-0 midway through the half.

A poor clearance then allowed McLean to get his name on the scoresheet and on the stroke of half time, Dan Mason finished from close range following a cross by James Davis.

McLean’s second goal came after a lovely reverse pass from Bulpitt and James Davis couldn’t believe he didn’t make it 7-0 when he watched his shot hit both posts before staying out.

Portsmouth substitute Callum Coker missed a golden chance to grab a consolation as he shot wide when one-on-one , to round off a miserable night for the hosts.
