Phil Jones says England must play to their potential when they take on the might of Spain and France over the next few days.

The Three Lions are currently on a run of 15 games unbeaten, stretching back to the World Cup in Brazil. And after qualifying for Euro 2016 in style they now face tough friendlies against two of Europe's top nations.

First up on Friday night is a game against the European champions in Alicante, followed by the home match against France at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday.

Jones says he is excited by the opportunity to face teams who, like England, will have designs on success at next summer's Euros.

"When the friendlies get announced these are the games you want to play – against the best in the world," said the Manchester United defender.

"We are on the route where we are building up to the Euros and all the games we have lead up to that. It starts now.

"Spain have a great history and so have we. But we need to make sure we focus on how we are going to beat them."

He continued: "Let’s not forget we are on a great run of form and we have done really well. The last time we were beaten was against Uruguay.

"We now have two tough tests ahead against Spain and France. We are a good team as well and hopefully we can do ourselves justice and go and win the games.

"We want to keep our form, that is key, especially going into a big championship. We need to be ready and we will see where we are at the end of that."

Jones, who has played 18 times for England, was in Roy Hodgson's squads for both Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup.

After experiencing the disappointment of an early exit from Brazil, he is keen to put that right when they arrive in France in 2016.

And the former Blackburn Rovers man believes the upcoming friendlies, including the March games against Germany and Holland, will prepare the Three Lions for the challenges that they will meet at the Finals.

"Whatever team the manager picks we have a fantastic squad full of experienced players," said the 23-year-old.

"Hopefully these games can showcase the younger players as we know how good they are.

"The build-up to the World Cup was very good with all the training camps and flights and preparations, but it wasn’t to be. Hopefully we can prove people wrong in the Euros."

He added: "We don’t need to convince people. Everyone has their own opinions but we know ourselves how good we are when we play to our potential.

"This is what we have to do on Friday and Tuesday."
