After firing Reading to the top of the table with victory at Doncaster Rovers Belles, Lauren Bruton insists the result will act as a big statement of intent.

The midfielder hit two second-half goals as the Royals leapfrogged their opponents and ended their unbeaten start to the FA WSL 2 season on Saturday, with Bianca Bragg notching the third in a fine 3-0 win.

The result was more impressive given the Belles' superb home record – they had not lost a game on their own soil since September 2013 in WSL – and Bruton believes there is more to come from her team going forward.

"Doncaster have been really good at home in the past couple of seasons, but we’ve just shown how strong a team we are and how it’s hard to beat us," she said.

"Hopefully we can go through the rest of the season like this as well.

"We had a loss and a draw a couple of games ago and our confidence was low, but we came back fighting last week and we’ve kept the momentum going here – hopefully we can push on now.

"This will give us loads of confidence, but we’ve still got to play Everton and Donny again, so we’ve still got lots of tough games."

Yeovil Town’s Helen Bleazard scored the only goal in a tight 1-0 win at Everton, Michelle Hinnigan coming closest to a response for the Toffees with chances hard to come by on the day.

The three points ensured Yeovil stayed within touching distance of the leading pack, and Bleazard was quick to acknowledge how key the victory could prove.

"It was definitely an important win, we are really glad of those points," she said.

"We know we didn’t play well but sometimes you need to grind results out. We know that, and we can work on it in the week.

"It’s definitely a big boost. All the girls will be buzzing after this one because Everton are a really good team."

Elsewhere, Oxford United held on to overcome London Bees 2-1 having led by two goals at the break.

Kayleigh Hines contributed one of the home side’s strikes from a free-kick, with the midfielder later commenting on her team’s fine start to the season.

"The spirits are really high in the camp – we’ve got another three points and we’re delighted with that," Hines said.

"With the draw at Reading, that’s three matches unbeaten now, so we’re delighted to get the win here."

Olivia Fergusson and Beth Merrick scored two apiece as Aston Villa secured an impressive triumph at Durham, the 4-1 result also featuring a fine long-range effort from the Wildcats’ Jemma Purfield.

Elsewhere, Millwall Lionessess beat Watford 3-2 to maintain their unbeaten start in FA Women’s Super League with BT Sport.
