Former England Under-21 international Nathan Baker is back in contention for an FA Cup Final place after returning to training for Aston Villa.

The central defender has timed his return well as he is set to be available in time for the trip to Wembley for the first time since suffering a knee injury in their FA Cup semi-final win over Liverpool

It was originally feared the 24-year-old was out for the season, leaving Villa in a defensive crisis following the season-ending injury to Ciaran Clark as well as Philippe Senderos struggling to reach match fitness following his injury problems.

Baker missed Villa's vital run of Premier League games after the Wembley heroics, but now looks set for at least a place in Tim Sherwood's squad for the Final.

Speaking ahead of the club's penultimate Premier League game of the season, at Southampton, Sherwood explained: "Nathan hasn't trained for too many days. It will be too early for him this weekend."

With just two fit central defenders in Ron Vlaar and Jores Okore, Villa's results are made all the more impressive considering their lack of available defenders. However, the academy graduate's return is a boost for the Midlands club.

Baker will be assessed before next week's final league game against Burnley which puts him in contention for the FA Cup Final against Arsenal the following week.
