Former England striker Teddy Sheringham believes Young Lion James Wilson could be the man to lead the line for Manchester United.

The 19-year-old has been a regular in Louis van Gaal’s squad this season and has also caught the attention of former Reds forward Sheringham.

Currently coaching the strikers at West Ham United, Sheringham has a keen eye on all of the forwards around the Premier League.

And England U20s ace Wilson is one player in which the former Spurs star sees great potential.

"I really like James Wilson," revealed Sheringham, who scored 46 goals in 145 appearances during a four-season spell at Old Trafford.

"He’s very direct, scores goals, has good pace and that added bonus of being a left-footer – they always tend to catch defenders off guard and it always looks more special when the left-footed strike goes in.

"I like his attitude, he looks a good player, a good prospect and one that everyone needs to keep an eye on."

Wilson could be involved for England U20s when they play Mexico and USA later this month, with boss Aidy Boothroyd naming his squad on Thursday.

But Sheringham believes Wilson has a big part to play in United’s team in the years to come, should he be given the chance to shine.

"It’s a shame for him that Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie are in front of him," he told United Review.

"Louis van Gaal said recently that he doesn’t have a striker who can score 20 goals a season, but I think if you put Wilson up there with Wayne Rooney then you’d have two players who can reach those figures for you."

England U20s take on Mexico at Barnet’s Hive on Wednesday 25 March, before hosting USA at Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park on Sunday 28 March.

Tickets for both games cost £3 for adults and £1.50 for concessions and are on sale now. Call 0208 381 3800 for tickets at Barnet, or 0845 872 3335 for the game in Plymouth.
