On This Day: Maradona's 'Hand of God' puts Lions out

One of the most infamous days in England’s history happened 29 years ago - Diego Maradona inspired Argentina to knock the Three Lions out of the 1986 World Cup.

England lost 2-1 in Mexico, and both goals against will never be forgotten - but for completely different reasons.

While Maradona's first was highly controversial, the winner was a show of sublime individual skill that was, and still is, marvelled at.

Former England midfielder Peter Reid lined up for Bobby Robson’s side that afternoon at the Aztec Stadium, and he recalled his memories from the day.

“I always remember the Maradona game,” Reid told FATV. “I won’t go on about the great goal and the handball – but I remember going down the tunnel and I remember it going off.

“They were singing in our faces and Terry Butcher in particular wasn’t happy.”

The FA’s historian, David Barber, has witnessed first-hand a quarter-final at football’s showpiece between the two nations.

And although one was successful, he along with many others still feels a sense of frustration from what happened in Central America.

Reid recalls the World Cup in 1986

“England have played in eight World Cup quarter finals and both matches with Argentina, in 1966 and 1986, had their controversial moments,” he said.

“As a schoolboy I was in a Wembley crowd of 90,000 on a warm Saturday afternoon when Alf Ramsey’s heroes beat an Argentinian side whose influential captain Antonio Rattin had been dismissed in the first half.

"Twenty years later I was watching on TV with my parents down in Eastbourne as Bobby Robson’s England crashed out to two Maradona goals in Mexico City’s Aztec Stadium.

“Maradona’s first, his infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal, was scored 29 years ago today.

“We were five minutes into the second half and it was 0-0. Argentina’s skipper and No.10, the star of the tournament, ran at England’s defence looking to play a one-two.

"But Steve Hodge, the Villa midfielder, managed to intercept and flicked a looping back-pass towards Peter Shilton.

“The goalkeeper raced out and seemed set for an easy punched clearance, despite the diminutive Maradona going for the same ball.

"Suddenly the ball was in the net. My thought at the time was: How could he have beaten Shilton to such a high ball? It didn’t make sense.

“Shilts was certain it was handball. At the touchline Bobby Robson looked bemused. The referee, from Tunisia, hadn’t seen anything untoward and awarded a goal.

"Maradona scored a sublime second, Gary Lineker headed England back in contention near the end and then missed another brilliant John Barnes cross from the left by inches.”
