Gareth Southgate wants to ensure there is a relaxed England camp at the UEFA European Championship this summer.

The Under-21s squad flew out to their Czech Republic base in Olomouc on Sunday, a venue which they are already familiar with following a training camp there in March.

And the head coach is happy with their hotel and facilities, with the players due to remain there throughout the group stages over the next ten days.

Group B: England, Italy, Portugal, Sweden

"We are staying in an area that is far enough out of town that we are not going to be swamped, but it is close enough for them to walk in and have a cup of coffee, meet local people or go and see their families," revealed Southgate, whose side kick-off their Euro challenge against Portugal on Thursday.

"They are also young lads and being away from home is a challenge.

"But I want them to have responsibility and there is no reason from what I have seen over the last 18 months why I shouldn’t be that way.

"Although it is a young team, you have to give them responsibility. They have never betrayed that responsibility."

When asked on what sort of rules and regulations Southgate may have for the trip, the former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough defender admits there will not be any lists of fines on the wall or dietary changes to what has stood the group in good stead so far.

"I don’t have a load of rules," he said.

"They know they have got to be respectful, which is being on time for things and so on.

"When you have lists of rules and fines, number one, someone has to collect them in and that is a problem in itself!

"And number two, I’m not sure that is discipline. That’s just putting rules up and I’m not sure that means anything.

"I think the players have got to be relaxed enough so that they play.

"I have said to them 'Look – we know internally what our objective is', but we want this to be a good life experience for them as well, we want them to embrace it.

"Something like the media attention, for instance, is going to be different and I want them to embrace that too.

“This is part of preparation for going into the seniors, so they will learn from that."
