Alex Scott says England Women can build on their opening World Cup performance.

Mark Sampson’s squad slipped to a 1-0 defeat to France on Tuesday.

But the defender believes her team-mates can take heart from the way they largely nullified the third best team in the world, conceding only a thunderous 20-yard drive by Eugenie Le Sommer.

Scott said: “We kept a top nation quiet. We neutralised some of their star players.

“At the end of the day we lost, but it’s something to build on.

“We had a game plan and we restricted them to just a few chances. We did well in that area but we will review it.

“We’ve got areas to work on going into the next two games.”

England’s second match is against Mexico on Saturday and they round off their Group F campaign against Colombia next Wednesday.

Mexico and Colombia drew 1-1 on Tuesday, meaning an England win at the weekend will put them right back in the frame.

Scott, who earned her 124th cap against France, added: “Mark has always said it’s a squad game. It’s not about individual players.

“He already knows his starting 11 for the next game and he’s got a game plan for it just like he did against the French.”
