With the shootout level at eight-all and having saved Steven Naismith's earlier penalty and seen his Everton counterpart Joel Robles hit the bar with his, Adrian threw down his gloves before coolly converting his spot-kick to seal the victory.

"I felt quite relaxed and I didn't have any nerves. I thought, 'I'll take off my gloves, this game is over' and I struck the ball," Adrian said afterwards.

"I have never taken a penalty before - only in training for a joke, but not serious. Never in my life had I struck one in an important game.

"I feel really happy, not just for me but for all my team-mates, for the fans and for the club because it's a good moment for us," he told WHUFC.co.uk.

His manager Sam Allardyce admitted he had not been as calm as his no.1 during the epic contest.

"It was nothing like a Premier League game to be honest. Both teams just went out and tried to win it and in the end we got what we deserved," he said.

"No he doesn't [practice]. On the day it's having the nerve, attitude and belief in your own ability to take it.

"Adrian saved one brilliantly and then scored the last one. It was a great finish for us and one we deserved over the two games."

West Ham United will now travel to Bristol City in the next round.
