Sunderland boss Gus Poyet admitted he “loves the distraction” of a Cup run after his side defeated Leeds United on Sunday.

Patrick van Aanholt’s first half strike was enough to seal the Black Cats a spot in Monday’s FA Cup Fourth Round draw with a 1-0 win, and Poyet says it was a relief to end a frustrating run of home form against the Championship side.

Poyet, who made six changes to his side from the defeat at Manchester City on Thursday, said: “We made a few changes, but this was a good team. We needed to win at home – it was quite embarrassing with only one win in four months at home.

“I think it was decent from us in the first half, we were totally in control – but when you are in that situation you need to put the game to bed.

“I’m happy with the result, to be in the next round as that’s what the Cup is all about, but I’m a little disappointed with the finishing.

“We had so many chances to put the game to bed early, but it’s something we need to improve.”

Having guided Sunderland to the League Cup final last season, the boss is targeting another attempt at reaching Wembley this season – and says he loves how the magic of the Cup brings everyone together.

“I love it – I think it is great,” he said. “It brings special moments and brings the team together with the fans.”

Poyet added: “I love to play football. Some people think playing a cup game is a distraction, but I don’t get distracted.

“If people don’t want a cup game on a Wednesday night or whatever then they should go to the casino.”
