Greenwood wants England to bounce back against USA

Alex Greenwood has earned six England caps since her debut against Italy last year

Alex Greenwood wants England Women to banish memories of their recent defeat to Germany by putting on a better performance against USA on Friday.

Mark Sampson’s side lost 3-0 to the eight-time European champions at Wembley Stadium in November.

And now they are preparing to entertain the world’s top-ranked team at MK Dons.

The Three Lions qualified for this summer’s World Cup with consummate ease, winning all ten matches – but Greenwood believes USA will test them to the limit.

She said: "We have had a good few weeks with our clubs and now we’re really looking forward to the game on Friday.

"USA are the opponents we need to be playing before the World Cup. Germany was a massive test and USA will be just the same. They are the two best sides in the world.

"It will be tough but hopefully we can perform well. It’s important we keep on improving, especially with the World Cup coming around so fast."

Left-back Greenwood, who recently signed for Notts County, played the final six minutes at Wembley, replacing Demi Stokes.

Germany raced into a 2-0 lead courtesy of an own goal from Alex Scott and a tidy finish from their captain Celia Sasic, who also netted the third goal just before the break.

England were unable to launch a second-half comeback, but Greenwood said her team-mates have gained a lot from the game.

She added: "We have learnt so much from the Germany match, but we still need to analyse it a bit more over the next day or so. Hopefully we can pick another few things out of it which will help us against the US.

"We know we still have quite a bit of work to do before we head out to the World Cup, but that’s exactly what we are here to do.

She continued: "Just a couple of months ago the World Cup seemed so far away. Now it’s within touching distance. These are exciting times and we just can’t wait to get out there."

England have been drawn in Group F at the World Cup alongside France, Mexico and Colombia.

The tournament will take place in Canada between 6 June and 5 July.

Tickets for the USA match are priced £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. A family ticket (two adults and two children) is available at £10 and group booking discounts apply.
