Simon Grayson: FA Cup win could 'galvanise the group'

Preston boss Simon Grayson is hoping to make progress in The FA Cup
Preston North End boss Simon Grayson sees Tuesday’s FA Cup replay with Sheffield United as a chance to breathe life into their season.

The Lilywhites have endured what Grayson describes as a "horrible month" in January, with no wins in seven games since their Third Round victory over Norwich City at the start of the month.

That run has seen North End’s League One title challenge slip to a play-off charge, but the manager knows how one result can change the momentum again.

"We just want to get back to winning ways after a disappointing month in January for us," said the former Leeds United and Blackpool boss.

"Hopefully this tie will be the one which galvanises the group and gives them the incentive and buzz to carry on the rest of the campaign with.

"It's a fantastic Cup tie for us, we've had some good games with Sheffield United and it'll be a special night under the lights at Bramall Lane.

"We've got to go there and be hard to beat, we know how they're going to play but I want us to go and play with a really positive attitude.

"Why can't we go there, produce a performance and get into the next round of The FA Cup?"

The teams couldn’t be separated after the first tie at Deepdale ten days ago when it ended in a 1-1 draw.

Since then, the Fifth Round draw has paired the winners of their replay against either Cambridge United or Manchester United, who also play their replay on Tuesday.

And regardless of who wins at Old Trafford, Grayson says the prospect of North End extending their FA Cup run even further appeals to everyone.

"We've got a massive incentive to get through to the next round of the Cup and a potential tie against Cambridge, or who everybody will be thinking, Manchester United," he told PNE Player.

"That's the beauty of the Cup, but it's hopefully a game we can win and then go and see who we can play in the next round.

"We'll go there against a team that have had some fantastic Cup results recently, it's a Yorkshire-Lancashire derby and the big incentive is potentially what's in the next round.

"We do believe in what we've got and if we win it, then great or if it's a deflected, scrappy goal then that might be the defining part of the season that we've been looking for."
