Taylor Maloney was the hero as his coolly-taken spot-kick sent Charlton Athletic through to The FA Youth Cup fourth round, with 4-2 victory on penalties over local rivals Millwall on Wednesday evening.

A fiercely-contested south London derby saw the sides locked at 1-1 after 90 and 120 minutes at the Valley, before Jordan Beeney twice dived to his right to brilliantly save penalties from Mikael Ndjoli and Eze Ebuzoeme.

And Maloney held his nerve from 12 yards to book the Addicks – who reached The FA Youth Cup final back in 1987 with a team including Scott Minto and Carl Leaburn – a spot in the next round.

Chris Millar had given Charlton a 68th-minute lead with a spectacular first-time volley from Maloney’s corner but just four minutes later Lewis White equalised by smashing home after Maloney’s poor clearance.

Both teams then had chances to win the tie but Beeney and Lions stopper Harry Girling held firm before the hosts emerged triumphant following the lottery of penalties.

Tottenham Hotspur are also into round four as they hammered Rotherham United by 4-0 at the Lamex Stadium in Stevenage.

England youngster Keanan Bennetts gave Spurs the lead on 13 minutes after alertly converting the rebound when his initial shot hit the post before fellow Young Lion Kazaiah Sterling turned home Zenon Stylianides’ cutback after the break.

Ryan Loft made it 3-0 by side-footing home from 14 yards and U17s starlet Samuel Shashoua completed the rout as his 25-yard effort was deflected in.

Elsewhere, Norwich City saw off Hull City 3-1 as Benny Ashley-Seal netted either side of half-time and Todd Cantwell secured a Canaries victory late on.

And on Tuesday evening, Preston North End saw off Carlisle 2-1 after extra-time as Josh Earl netted the dramatic late winner after Cumbrians' youngster Arron Bradbury had cancelled out Jack Burgoyne’s opener to take the game beyond 90 minutes.
