There were goals aplenty in the FA WPL this weekend

Northern Division

Newcastle United sit top of the table after picking up their second Premier League win of the season with a 2-1 triumph over Blackburn.

After a 6-1 victory in their first match against Nuneaton Town the home side were made to fight hard for their three points this time around.

The opener came on 37 minutes as Beth Gardener hit an excellent curling shot from the edge of the box, however they were pegged back within two minutes.

The game ebbed and flowed in the second period but the winner came after 73 minutes when Claire Pitt wrapped up the points with a thunderbolt from outside the area.

While it is still early days Derby are hot on the heels of Newcastle after they produced a solid performance to dispatch Nuneaton Town 4-1 – Melissa Johnson helping herself to a hat-trick.

Johnson opened the scoring after six minutes before Lorna Abbey made it 2-0 six minutes later.

The score remained at two until the second period when Johnson added her second after 48 minutes and, after Nuneaton netted their glimmer of hope, she rounded off the scoring on 64 minutes.

Sporting Club Albion are the only other side to have a 100 per cent record intact after they saw off a spirited fight from Preston North End to win 3-2.

Preston took the lead after just nine minutes thanks to Keeleigh Savage and Savage was on hand again after 58 minutes to double their lead.

But that was as good as it got for Preston as Sporting Club Albion began their fightback.

First came a lifeline on 65 minutes as Abigail Cottam pulled one back and they had the equaliser after 77 minutes as Hazzana Parnell restored parity.

And it looked like the game was heading for a draw when Eleanor Clarke popped up two minutes into injury time to snatch all the points.

Elsehwhere Huddersfield sit fourth after they produced a clinical display to beat Guiseley 7-0.

Huddersfield were three goals to the good after just 16 minutes thanks to goals from Kate Mallin, Emily Heckler and Shaunna Jein.

And it did not stop there as Sammy Conroy’s volley made it four before Heckler netted from the spot before adding her third and fourth before the end.

Stoke City picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 triumph over Loughborough Foxes and in the final match Bradford City came out on top against Nottingham 3-0.

Bradford produced a dominant first-half display and had their reward when Hannah Campbell fired home from a corner.

That goal put Nottingham up against it and they fell further behind when Campbell bagged her second of the day with time ticking down.

And the final nail in the coffin came as Sarah Danby hit a left foot shot from the edge of the box to keep Bradford in touch with the top of the table.

SOUTHERN DIVISION

Four goals from Hope Suominen gave Cardiff City their first win of the season as they emphatically saw off Lewes Ladies.

Kelly Bartlett had put Cardiff ahead after 28 minutes before Suominen took over proceedings.

A brace before half time was just the beginning for Suominen as she sealed her hat-trick on 53 minutes before rounding off the scoring on the hour mark.

Second place Brighton & Hove Albion missed the chance to stay level with leaders Coventry as they played out a goalless draw with Charlton.

There were chances aplenty for both sides with Kit Graham heading an early effort into the arms of Brighton keeper Faye Baker.

Lucy Soames went close for Brighton as she saw her effort rattle the crossbar before keeper Megan Lynch turned over a Charlotte Gurr free-kick.

Charlton looked dangerous in the second period but neither side could find the vital goal that would have sealed the all-important three points.

Elsewhere, Coventry kept up their 100 per cent record as they saw off Queens Park Rangers 3-0.

Marie Gauntlett’s goal put the league leaders ahead after 15 minutes and they doubled their tally ten minutes later as Danielle Selmes turned home.

With the result all-but secure Coventry added insult to injury as Annabel Johnson added a third on 71 minutes to wrap up the points.

Elsewhere there was a cracker between Forest Green Rovers and Plymouth as they played out a 3-3 draw.

Plymouth took an early lead against their hosts with a goal after just three minutes but they were pegged bag almost immediately as Charlotte King’s long ball deceived keeper and found its way into the back of the net.

But parity did not last long and Plymouth found themselves in front once again on the half-hour mark.

Paige Stewart had the chance to level for the hosts three minutes later but saw her effort rattle the woodwork and Forest Green were made to pay two minutes later as Plymouth pulled further ahead.

It was a rip-roaring first-half and the two sides were not finished there as Ellie Olds saw her goal-bound effort cleared off the line.

But the hosts went in at the break only one gaol behind after Ella Hitchcox fired an effort from long range past the keeper.

After a scintillating first period the hosts went in search of the all-important equaliser but saw wave after wave of attack repelled by a resilient Plymouth defence.

It looked like it was not going to happen for the home side but Hitchcox was on hand to save the day as she tapped in from close range to salvage a point.

And in the day’s other match Tottenham Hotspur found themselves edged out by C&K Basildon.

After a goalless first half the visitors finally edged in front on 65 minutes when Zoe Rushden fired home a free-kick and it proved to be enough to take the spoils.
