Three Lions stars past and present gathered at St. George’s Park on Thursday as the Together For England Roadshow celebrated England’s national day.

Among those in attendance on St. George's Day were former England striker Michael Owen, Under-21s manager Gareth Southgate and his captain Jack Butland – and England Women’s international Jade Moore.

The events at the national football centre form part of a drive to inspire the next generation of England footballers and fans – and Owen said he was delighted to be a part of proceedings.

“I think it’s a brilliant initiative,” said Owen, who scored 40 goals for England.

“The FA is famed for creating great initiatives and really working with the people and with football supporters from up and down the country.

“Football is the number one game in the country. It’s the game that brings everyone together. It’s such a great game and a worldwide game too so it’s important to celebrate that.”

With football so intricately linked to English identity, Owen also offered his support for initiative of linking the national game to the national day.

“We haven’t really, as a football association, celebrated the actual day and linked it together before,” he added.

“So it’s great we can do something today and link our national game with our national day.

“There’s a lot of proud people out there. I was proud myself every time I wore the jersey so to be able to give something back and meet all the people here celebrating the day and their love for the game is great.”

The event took place on the indoor 3G pitch at the Burton facility – the same pitch often used by England’s players when they are with the national team.

Local school children from Victoria Community School, Arthur Terry School, Williams Shrewsbury School and Stafford College took part in a range of activities – under the watchful gaze of FA-qualified coaches and the England stars.

Under-21s captain Butland also took time out to attend the day’s activities, and said he was proud to be a part of the celebrations.

“It’s brilliant to be here on St. George’s Day with these kids who are getting a taste of what it’s like to use the facilities and be an England footballer today,” he said.

“I hope they get a little bit of inspiration, whether it’s to go on to play the game for fun or as a professional – it’s all about inspiring them and making sure they enjoy the day.”

Meanwhile, St. George’s Park chairman David Sheepshanks welcomed the Roadshow, and said he hopes the day’s attendees will leave the national football centre feeling inspired.

“It’s a genuine red-letter day in our calendar and it’s an opportunity to open up St. George’s Park and show what we’re all about to the whole game,” said Sheepshanks.

“Having girls, boys and disability teams here is marvellous. This is what St. George’s Park stands for.

“Personal development, a place where you come to improve yourself and where you can access the best talent, the best support – and do it in the most stunning and inspirational environment."
