Surf's Up for Beach Boys as they feel Cup's Good Vibrations

The FA Cup Second Round Qualifying round-up
Despite being forced to use utility man Jack Lampe in goal during the second-half, Concord Rangers coasted into The FA Cup Third Round Qualifying as ten-man Wealdstone endured a torrid evening in a replay of Saturday’s 1-1 draw.

The Stones were up against it following Luke O’Nien’s dismissal for handball on the goal line a quarter of an hour in – allowing Danny Glozier to step-up to claim his first goal of the evening.

Eight minutes before the break it got worse for the visitors as the hosts doubled their advantage in similar fashion to their first thanks to the goalscorer holding his nerve once more from the spot.

The ‘Good Vibrations’ were being felt all around the Beach Boys’ Canvey Island home ground of Thames Road, but it would not be all ‘Fun, Fun, Fun’ as they suffered a blow minutes after the restart.

Concord goalkeeper Jamie Butler, who was named in the England C squad earlier in the day, went down under a heavy challenge that caused him to be stretchered from the action. Lampe came off the bench to replace the stricken Butler, and he was called into action minutes after his introduction as he produced a brilliant save to keep out a header.

At the other end, Wealdstone’s Jonathan North was enjoying a fine performance, and his side had him to thank for not falling further behind after a string of saves.

After eleven minutes of additional time at the end, Concord were able to celebrate their 2-0 victory and start planning for the visit of Winchester City, who were also celebrating after a 1-0 win at Newport.

A delayed kick-off at Sheffield FC’s Coach and Horses ground, courtesy of a broken down power generator, failed to take the charge out of Warrington Town as their Cup run continued.

Despite starting over half an hour late, the visitors produced an electric opening with a goal just six minutes in - Scott Metcalfe’s cross from the left finding Steve Foster to tap home.

The Yellows, managed by former FA Cup winner Peter Reid’s younger brother Shaun, will have been delighted with his side’s start, and things got better for him ten minutes later.

After a foul on Metcalfe inside the box, the winger dusted himself off to convert from the spot.

Into the second-half, and the world’s oldest football club grabbed a lifeline as James Knowles reduced the deficit – but the impressive Metcalfe proved to be a thorn in their side once more as he turned provider for Foster to curl home with nine minutes left on the clock. The strike ensured a 3-1 victory and a trip to Colwyn Bay in eleven days time.

Mark Haslam scored a wonderful individual goal as Ashton United silenced the majority of the 442 crowd inside Salford City’s Moor Lane three minutes before the half-time break.

The defender picked up the ball in midfield and embarked on a surging run forward to fire home to give his side a deserved lead at the interval.

The Ammies fought back in the second-half, and former Manchester United, Portsmouth and Sheffield United striker Danny Webber was presented with a chance to equalise, but he shot wide from the left of the area after being played through.

Despite some late pressure, Ashton hung on to inflict a first defeat of the season on their opponents and secure an away trip to Spennymoor Town a week on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Gosport Borough hammered seven goals without reply past Larkhall Athletic to set-up an away tie at Maidenhead United and Lowestoft Town were 5-0 winners over Coalville Town – sealing a trip to Tamworth.
