San Marino played their first official international match in 1990 and clashed with England for the first time three years later in a World Cup Qualifier at Wembley.
David Platt, promoted to the England captaincy, scored four and missed a penalty. Les Ferdinand netted on his debut and Carlton Palmer was also on target.
The return, played before a sparse crowd in Bologna’s Renato Dall’Ara Stadium, had a sensational start.
Stuart Pearce underhit a pass back to David Seaman and Davide Gualtieri pounced to score – after eight seconds!

England pulled themselves together for Paul Ince to rifle in an equaliser on 22 minutes and they ran out 7-1 winners in the end. Ian Wright notched four, Ince scored a second and Ferdinand also scored.
England’s 400th international victory proved to be a hollow one, Holland’s win in Poland taking them to the World Cup Finals in the US instead of England. It was Graham Taylor’s last match in charge.
England were drawn with San Marino in the same World Cup Qualifying Group for the Brazil Finals of 2014.
The teams met first at the new Wembley, a fantastic crowd of 84,654 piling in to see the home side triumph 5-0. On the scoresheet were Wayne Rooney (twice as captain), Danny Welbeck (twice) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

There was a debut too for Jonjo Shelvey, who replaced Michael Carrick on 66 minutes.
Five months later, in March 2013, a more modest gathering of 4,900 in Serravalle saw England run riot with a 8-0 victory.
Frank Lampard, skipper on the night, scored once and there were also goals for Jermain Defoe (two), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ashley Young, Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and the unfortunate Alex Della Valle, who scored in the wrong net to give England a 12th-minute lead.
San Marino’s star is striker Andy Selva, now 38, who is their all-time leading scorer.
The La Fiorita forward has claimed eight goals in his 66 internationals. Goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini has 39 caps while twin brother Davide, a defender, has 34. Both play for Libertas.
