Dael Fry wants to become first-choice for England U18s
Dael Fry is looking to establish himself as first-choice defender for England U18s after helping the Young Lions to two victories over Holland this week.

The Middlesbrough centre-half started on Wednesday as Neil Dewsnip’s youngsters came from behind to win 4-1, then came on as a second-half sub during the 3-1 victory over the Dutch at Bury’s JD Stadium on Friday.

“It’s been a great week. I didn’t think I was going to get on in the second game, but thankfully I did,” Fry told TheFA.com.

“It’s always hard coming on in a game like that, against good opposition, as you immediately have to catch up with the play. As I was getting changed to come off the bench, they scored, so it was always going to be hard – but I thought I did well and we managed to record a good 3-1 win.

“We are a great attacking force, and we did the business.”

Having been included in John Peacock’s U17 side that won the European Championship in May, Fry has a new boss to impress at international level this season in Dewsnip, but he did his chances of a future call-up no harm during his week with the national side.

“I was nervous coming in to this squad, due to the new manager and staff to impress, but once you get out on the training pitch, and you talk and learn from them, it’s an unbelievable experience,” Fry said.

“It’s always a pleasure playing for your country, and it’s another good achievement recording these two victories this week.”

He continued: “Joe Gomez has been included in the U19s so there’s an opportunity here. I want to crack on and do the best I can with ‘Boro, and that will be enough for me to keep getting picked for England.

“There are some more trips and tough games away for us coming up, so if I can keep performing at my club then the next step is to try and become first-choice centre-half for the U18s.”
