Talk of potential Gateshead FA Cup tie banned at Shildon

Ben Wood is refusing to think about potential FA Cup north east derby
All talk of a potential FA Cup derby with Gateshead has been banned at Shildon, according to striker Ben Wood.

The County Durham Northern League side were the lowest ranked team in the hat for Monday’s First Round Proper draw, which saw the victors of their replay with Norton United drawn at home to Conference Premier outfit Heed.

"We have to concentrate on Wednesday night first and see where we go from there," Wood told TheFA.com.

"Obviously we know what potentially awaits us in the next round, but Norton is going to be a really tough game. It could go either way, so we need to make sure we deal with that first before we think about Gateshead.

"That’s the cherry we are aiming for, and I’m sure it would be a full house – but you can’t get ahead of yourself though, that’s when you start to drop from giving 100 per cent in your performances.

"So we’ll go in with the normal attitude and only talk about Gateshead if we get the job done and go through."

Having taken the lead through Mark Hudson on Saturday before their hosts were reduced to ten men, Shildon were pegged back as a John Brackstone own goal ensured the tie went to a replay.

And after dominating the first game, Wood admits that he and his team-mates may not get a better chance to progress than they had at the weekend.

"We created a lot of chances, and to be fair I missed a few," he admitted. "We will probably never get a better chance than the other day.

"We were one up, and they had a man sent-off just before half time, so we had a great chance. But to be fair to them, they really stuck together and got something out of it, which will give them loads of confidence for the replay.

"We need to go in with the same attitude we showed on Saturday, as it’s going to be a hard game again."

And having had a large and vocal away support backing them in Staffordshire, Wood is hoping for a full house at Dean Street to cheer them on into the First Round.

"We had loads of supporters there backing us - the Shildon fans are amazing," he said.

"They’ll travel all over, even in the Northern League, we normally bring as many as the home team have.

"It’s always great backing from them, and hopefully they’ll be there in their numbers on Wednesday spurring us on."
