James Milner celebrates his goal with City team-mate Sergio Aguero

England star James Milner was on the scoresheet in the Champions League on Tuesday, but his goal couldn't help Manchester City to victory over CSKA Moscow.

The Three Lions midfielder put Manuel Pellegrini's side 2-0 up in the 38th minute following an opener from Sergio Aguero inside an eerily empty Khimky Arena in the Russian capital, with CSKA being forced to play behind closed doors by UEFA.

But the hosts staged a second-half comeback to deny City what would have been a crucial victory in their quest to progress beyond the first group stage of the competition, with a debatable late penalty from Bedras Natcho levelling the scores at 2-2.

England U17s and Chelsea forward Dominic Solanke

Young Lion Dom Solanke made his debut for Chelsea on Tuesday

Back in England, Chelsea had no such problems at Stamford Bridge by beating Slovenian outfit Maribor by 6-0, with former Three Lions captain John Terry amongst the scorers in the first half along with Loic Remy and Didier Drogba.

An own goal and a brace from Eden Hazard sealed a comprehensive victory for Jose Mourinho's men after the break.

The second half also saw a Chelsea debut for England U17s striker Dominic Solanke, who was introduced as a 73rd minute substitute for midfielder Oscar.

There was also a full programme of fixtures in the Championship, where England Under-21s captain Jack Butland kept a clean sheet on his debut for Derby County.

Stoke City 'keeper Butland joined the Rams on an emergency loan on Monday and was thrust straight into the action for Steve McClaren's men at Blackpool's Bloomfield Road.

And a second-half goal from Chris Martin was enough to secure three points for Derby, who also fielded Butland's Under-21s team-mate Will Hughes and England U20s forward Jordon Ibe.

Elsewhere, there was a goal for Under-21s forward Cauley Woodrow, who scored in the second half for Fulham in their 3-3 draw with Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.

In League One, there was another goal for ex-England U19 striker Devante Cole as the Manchester City loanee scored for Barnsley in their 3-2 defeat against Notts County at Oakwell.

And Under-21s striker Benik Afobe continued his good start to the campaign with a late winner for MK Dons against Fleetwood Town. Afobe is currently on loan at stadiummk from Arsenal.
