As his side prepare for the next round of The FA Cup, Redhill manager Mike Maher has hailed the immediate impact summer signing Michael Hunter.

Redhill face Greenwich Borough in the FA Cup Third Round Qualifying on Sunday.

And Maher is managing a young burgeoning side in the Ryman League Division One South.

The addition of goalkeeper Hunter between the sticks has helped the club punch above their weight so far this season.

Hunter was in fine fettle for the Cup victory over Ryman Premier side Tonbridge Angels in the previous round and the former Horsham man has been having a similarly positive influence in the dressing room, where he leads by example.

“It's difficult to single out one person for credit for what we've achieved so far this season but Michael has certainly made a big difference,” Maher said ahead of the visit to Greenwich.

“He isn't a screamer or shouter but when he has something to say, on the pitch or in the dressing room, he gets his message across in the right way and, most importantly, people listen.

“We felt very fortunate to be able to bring a goalkeeper of his quality to the club and he has not let us down for a second.”

Redhill won their final three matches of September but it has not all been plane sailing for Maher's men who have endured as many troughs as they have had enjoyed peaks so far this campaign.

But Maher believes the experiences at both ends of the spectrum will be the making of his side as they continue to strive.

“We feel we have over-achieved but it has been done through hard work and consistency with a young side”

“We have gone from quite a small club to where we are now but we have done it with no egos,” he said.

“We feel we have over-achieved but it has been done through hard work and consistency with a young side.

“Even now we are nursing a handful of players through and back from injuries which would usually really hurt a club at our level but we are managing because of the players we have here.

“Everyone is working hard and pulling in the right direction and we are all really excited to be playing in The FA Cup this weekend in what will be a really difficult match against quality opposition.”
