Chelsea wary of City threat as they close in on WSL title

Marie Hourihan knows Chelsea face a stern test on Sunday

Chelsea goalkeeper Marie Hourihan says Manchester City will go all-out to prevent her side clinching the FA WSL title on Sunday.

A victory over Everton last weekend means Chelsea's fate remains in their own hands - with a win guaranteeing the Blues a first FA WSL title.

However, Birmingham’s recent success at City kept up the pressure on Chelsea.

And 2013 champions Liverpool also have an outside chance if Chelsea and Birmingham both slip up, thus ensuring the title race will go down to the wire.

Although City have a Cup final against Arsenal to look forward to, Hourihan's is sure their opponents will be focused on derailing Chelsea's title charge.

“We lost to them in the semi-final of the Continental Cup recently and they have got that final to prepare for this week before our game,” she said.

“They have some very strong players and they will want to finish the season strongly.

“Losing in the Continental Cup semi-final and also the semi-final of the FA Cup was hard to take and it does give you motivation to not want to be in a losing position again.

“But we will go there knowing victory will make us title winners and you don’t need any more motivation than that.”

Meanwhile, instead of battling it out for the Champions League places, back-to-back defeats have seen City slip to seventh place.

But Nick Cushing's side have proved they can take any top side to task.

They qualified for the Continental Cup final by beating Chelsea – and the boss has urged his side to make their creativity count.

Manchester City boss Nick Cushing has called for his side to end the season positively

“Anyone at the game against Birmingham would tell you there was only one team likely to score with 30 minutes to go,” said the Man City boss.

“But if you don’t take chances in football you’re always going to let opportunities slip.

"At the end of the season we’ll review our games and I’m sure we feel we could have had more points on the table.

“We can’t change the fact that we’ll have a huge part to play on who wins the league, but a success for us is trying to score and making those chances in front of goal to win.

“We could have been joint third and pushing for Europe if not for one or two disappointing results, but Chelsea have shown that if you put consistency together you can go on to win the league.”
