Hannah Blundell says Chelsea must remain focused

Everton may be bottom of FA Women’s Super League 1 but Chelsea defender Hannah Blundell insists they will be relishing the chance to derail her side’s title challenge.

The Toffees are guaranteed to finish bottom of WSL 1 after last weekend’s defeat to Notts County, who stayed up at their expense.

And Everton’s situation could not be more different to Chelsea’s, who are honing in on their first title with two games to go.

A Chelsea win and defeats for both Liverpool and Birmingham will guarantee the silverware heads to West London.

However, Liverpool are lingering just one point behind in second and Blundell says her team must be on their guard against FA Cup finalists Everton.

“Everton are a really good side and it’s a testament to how strong the league is that they are where they are,” said Blundell.

“It should be a really good game and we are making sure we are ready for it.

“Obviously we are in a good position and we need to make sure we capitalise on that.

“With the players they have got we know we are going to have to be at our best because they have real quality in their side.

“But we look at every game on paper and think that we should be winning it and this is no different.”

Everton will be looking to sign off with a first league win of the season from their remaining two games, and have already managed to rain on the parade of two title challengers this year.

“We matched them at home earlier in the season and we need to do the same now”

Fern Whelan Everton

Successive draws to Birmingham and Merseyside rivals Liverpool in September have made sure the title race remains wide open to the very last – and Everton defender Fern Whelan sees no reason why this clash should be any different.

“Taking points off Liverpool and Birmingham shows that we’re not a million miles away from those big teams,” she added.

“Chelsea have that extra bit of quality in their side and that’s why they’re at the top of the table.

“We matched them at home earlier in the season and we need to do the same now, although we know it will be a difficult match.”
