'FA Cup a lifeblood for clubs like Worcester City'

Worcester line up for their Fourth Round Qualifying tie against Greenwich
The FA Cup has the capability of "saving" teams like Worcester City, according to the club’s community director.

Rich Widdowson is part of a group of fans who – with the club struggling financially and forced to play their home games at nearby Kidderminster - formed a Supporters’ Trust and set about  bringing the team back home to Worcester.

It has been a testing journey, but with a decision expected over a new ground and community centre from the local council expected imminently, there is light at the end of the tunnel for Widdowson and his fellow volunteers.

Ahead of that though, his club have a huge FA Cup tie to take care of.

They travel to Coventry City in the First Round Proper, and Widdowson says Cup runs can make all the difference for clubs such as Worcester.

"Financially it’s changed the club," he said.

"We always say that when we get to play in the Third Round Qualifying that we’re only four or five games away from potentially turning the club around completely.

"For non-League football, The FA Cup is the best thing in the world because there’s no other way clubs at our level could even dream of raising that amount of money.

"We’ve been saying it for as long as I can remember but Manchester United away in the Third Round saves the club," he said.

"If we got that it would change our club forever – it really is as simple as that. That small amount of money for Premier League clubs is a lifeblood for us."

Worcester are a club with an impressive Cup pedigree – responsible for inflicting arguably the biggest upset in the history of Liverpool, when they beat the Merseysiders 2-1 in 1959.

And Widdowson says memories such as those can only occur in The Cup.

He said: "People in Worcester love The FA Cup. We talk about it all the time.

"With our history – being the only the non-League club to knock out Liverpool since the First World War – it’s a competition we hold dear to our hearts.

"We talk about that game nearly 60 years ago like it was yesterday – and that’s what The FA Cup does for you."

So strong is the passion for The Cup in Worcester, that the club are expecting to travel to Coventry with substantial support.

He continued: "We’re expecting at least 3000, and it could be a lot more than that. It’s been a long time since we had a big game like this in The FA Cup.

"This is probably the biggest away game since we last played Coventry  in 1983."

“Our lads are up for this, there’s no doubt about that”

And will his team of part-timers go to Coventry and be intimidated? Not a chance, says Widdowson.

"Our lads are up for this, there’s no doubt about that," he claimed. "It does not matter if they are professional are we're not.

"They’re not going to think about that for a second though, and they’ll go there fancying their chances."

Coventry take on Worcester at The Ricoh Arena on Sunday 9 November and tickets are available from just £10.
