Phil Jagielka turns home the third goal against Peru

Phil Jagielka reflected on a “job well done” after England recorded a 3-0 win over Peru in their final home match before the World Cup.

The centre back turned home England’s third goal on 70 minutes after visiting goalkeeper Raul Fernandez dropped Leighton Baines’s corner.

Daniel Sturridge put Roy Hodgson’s side ahead with a sumptuous first-half effort and Jageilka’s defensive partner Gary Cahill doubled the lead with a header.

The Everton captain said: “We know it’s important, the last time the home fans get to see us play before the tournament, so it was important we put a good performance in.

“The way the scoreline went and the performance it was a job well done.

“We’ll look back at the game and iron out any little things that could have gone wrong, or slightly did.

“Joe [Hart] probably had one or two saves all game, so if you look at it like that for an international game we didn’t have much to do is testament to the team in front of him.”

Jagielka’s strike was just his second goal in 25 internationals and he revealed his delight at finding the back of the net.

He added: “It’s nice. If you see the pictures afterwards I had a pretty big smile on my face.

"I don’t get too many goals and keep getting told I need more. So hopefully this is the start of a hot-streak for me and it lasts for a few more games.

“We’re still not up to where we want to be, but it’s always nice to keep clean sheets, nice to score. Now we’re off to Miami, keep the momentum going, keep the progression going and hopefully keep the confidence there.”

Jagielka’s Toffees club mate John Stones came off the bench for his senior team debut and slotted in at right-back.

And the 31-year-old believes the youngster has a big future ahead of him.

Jagielka said: “Stonesy’s first proper season in Premier League football and it proves how well he’s done by nearly making the squad at such a young tender age.

“He’s played a lot of games centre-half but he’s also able to play right-back, so he has a lot of composure for a young lad that seems to be the way they are bred these days.

“He has a bright future ahead of him. Hopefully we can guide that at Everton, and I can try and help him there. Hopefully he’s got a lot more England appearances to come.”
