Raheem Sterling insists he'll give everything he's got if handed a chance at the World Cup, but won't predict a repeat of Michael Owen's impact at France '98.

Liverpool winger Sterling has been in dazzling form for his club this season providing the cut and thrust in one of the nation's best attacking forces.

The 19-year-old has earned his call-up to the Three Lions squad for Brazil, mirroring ex-Reds striker Owen who went to his first World Cup aged just 18 and burst onto the international scene with that goal against Argentina.

But Sterling is keen to focus on his own game and, if given an opportunity to play, says his first job will be to help the team.

"I'm just working hard and anything can happen," said Sterling. "I'm not going to say I'm going to do this amazing thing, but I'll definitely go out on the pitch and give 100 per cent and hopefully what I try to do will come off and work.

"But I'm not going to put pressure on myself and say I'll do what Michael Owen did [at France 98]."

He continued: "It's a World Cup and is every kid's dream. If I get selected I'll just go into the game as I have done in every game this season, purely to help my team mates.

"If anyone needs help then I 'll track back and work as a team player. Going forward then I'll try to do my best and create something for my team, so I won't be fazed by anything."

The former QPR youth-teamer was just 15 during the last World Cup, and was watching from home as a future team-mate got England's campaign off to a quick start with a goal against USA.

And now Sterling can't wait for his chance to play on the biggest stage of them all and "do the country proud".

"The first World Cup I can really remember was the last one when Steven [Gerrard] opened the scoring in the first game," he recalled. "I was sitting at home eating pizza and at half time went out for a little kick about to try and imitate these guys.

"I've always loved playing football and loved scoring goals. Hopefully I can get selected, from what I've seen on the telly it looks amazing.

"But I just want to try and get games and do the country proud."
