Greg Dyke: Clubs support Commission proposals

Greg Dyke reckons his England Commission proposals have significant support from clubs in this country – from the top flight and down through the lower leagues.

The FA Chairman released findings at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday – and the report recommended incentivising selection of English players, tightening work permit regulations and introducing B teams into the football pyramid.

Dyke told TheFA.com: “The process has been very interesting and intellectually quite stimulating - looking at the problem and saying 'what can you do about it?'

“I spent years in lower league football. I don't think it damages lower league football at all”

“We've spoken to everybody. We've spoken to so many clubs. Everybody buys into our analysis. Whether they will buy into our proposals…some will, some won't.

“Obviously it is not a slam-dunk but there is a good chance some of this can happen.”

But Dyke is certain something needs to be done to help boost the number of English players playing elite football.

He added: “If you look at the figures we have released today, last season the amount of English players in the English top flight was 29 per cent.

“This year it was down to 25 per cent. Now some of that was down to injuries but in the end, that is pretty dismal - because we don't have English players playing overseas.”

Dyke believes that the proposals would not hinder lower league clubs – indeed the former Brentford chairman says the implementation of B teams will benefit these teams.

He said: “I spent years in lower league football. I don't think it damages lower league football at all.

“What these clubs want is more money, and I think these proposals might bring more money.”
