Charlton Athletic defender Joe Gomez has done more than enough to deserve a good night's sleep - but he won't be resting until he has another clean-sheet for England U17s.

The 16-year-old has helped the Young Lions record a total shut-out so far in their qualification campaign for the European Championship - and he knows one more in their final match with Italy on Monday will seal a spot at the tournament in May.

Speaking at the team hotel in Otrokovice, Gomez told TheFA.com: "We've defended really well so far in qualifying. The games in Armenia were tough, but this Elite Round group is the next level up.

"We've had two great team performances so far since we arrived and both games we've had to work really hard to get the goals.

"John has emphasised before both games that a clean sheet would be key to us and we've battled hard to earn them.

"But it's not just the defence that has done well - it's everyone right the way from the front to the back. We've all done our jobs."

Gomez has started both games so far this week - starting alongside Dael Fry in the first game before lining up with Taylor Moore last time out - and Gomez says he has enjoyed playing with both men.

"I played with Dael in the Algarve and we communicate really well with each other," he explained. "We know when one goes to drop in and we've developed a really good partnership.

"Taylor is my room mate on the trip, and we've had a good week. We played together against Albania and did well, so it's been a good week for the three of us.

"Obviously the key is communicating and adapting to whoever you are partnered with."

Whoever lines up in central defence on Monday, Gomez says they will be preparing for their toughest test yet.

He added: "Italy are a good side and we will be in for a real physical test. We are going to have to match that if we want to get a result. The record we have worked hard for in qualifying will mean nothing if we don't get a result.

"All the boys are up for it - the result is the most important thing but we definitely want a clean sheet. As a defender it is what I thrive on and whoever is selected will be giving everything to shut them out."
