Adam Lallana says that representing England in his first World Cup is going to be a "huge honour" as the start of the competition in Brazil draws ever closer.

The Southampton midfielder is with Roy Hodgson’s squad at their World Cup base in Rio de Janeiro as they prepare for Saturday’s opener against Italy.

And having been a relatively late addition to the Three Lions squad during qualification, after only making his debut earlier this season, the 26-year-old is just keen to get things kicked-off.

"It's a World Cup in Brazil, it will probably only come around once a generation," he told TheFA.com.

"So to have the opportunity to be involved and to help England is a huge honour.

"I was delighted to get the call and now I can't wait to get going."

England’s preparations for the extravaganza in South America started off with some training in Portugal last month before returning to home turf and enjoying a Wembley send-off after a 3-0 victory over Peru.

Since then, Lallana and his team-mates have spent a week of training in Miami and played two further games before heading to their World Cup home in Rio on Sunday.

It’s been almost three weeks away for the group so far and the World Cup is yet to kick-off, but Lallana has no qualms about that.

"It's a long time away from home but we all know what to expect," he added.

"You come away with things to do and keep yourself busy."
